Is it Duffel bag or Duffle bag?

by Dennis Mok

A bit of history..

The duffel bag is an invention that originates from Belgium.  The name duffel also refers to the heavy canvas cloth that the town was known to produce.  The historical design is a large cylindrical bag made of cloth with a draw string enclosure at the top.  It was made popular in the US by its use in the military.  It is also referred to as "sea bags" by sailors and marines.

A little known fact is that the duffel bag has  a connection to surfer culture in post World War II California in the 1940s and 1950s.  Former US navy personnel would use the bag as a carry all when they hit the beach.  This trend caught on in Australia in the 1960s.

The duffel bag has evolved into different forms over the years and today, a large carry all is referred to as a duffel bag or duffle bag. Both spelling is now accepted and used interchangeably.

The most popular design of the duffel is the cabin duffle bag.  The rope top design gave way to the zipper along the side of the bag rather than the top to provide easier access to its contents.

The duffle bag is a versatile bag that comes in all sizes - providing travelers, gym goers, weekenders both practicality and increasingly, style.  Here are a few of our favorites.
